What is a liberty pass and why does it cost so much?

January 28, 2013 by Nutty Hiker Last Modified: March 3, 202279 Comments

Q. I have a question about Liberty pass, Can US Army personnel get them, and do they cost thousands of dollars to buy one? I have been receiving emails from someone supposedly on deployment in Korea, and he’s asked myself for 4700 Dollars to pay for his Liberty pass for 3 months to come over to the UK, I take it this isn’t right.

Answer to why a liberty pass costs so much.

What you are receiving is a scam. It’s not actually coming from a service member. This scam has been going around for several years.  The emails may or may not sound very legit. But trust me they are Scams and not from someone in the Military (or at least we seriously hope not).

A pass is not something that can be bought. It is something that is earned to allow servicemembers to stay off post and not have to be back on post in their quarters for accountability or bed check. It’s often referred to as a Liberty pass or Freedom pass overseas such as Korea. Here in the states, it is just basically a pass.

Hope this clears things up. Your best bet is to not even respond to emails such as that. They should be treated as SPAM and deleted as such.

Check our other military life articles here.

PLEASE NOTE: This also applies to flying back home for R&R from a deployment, or any other crazy thing these scammers can come up with. There have been a lot of comments posted for the same thing, just different wording. Due to the number of comments, if your question is answered in this article I will no longer respond. I do not have information about anything that applies to any other country, only the United States Military. If your question is about another country’s military or some other organization, I cannot answer that as I am only familiar with the U.S. Military as this is a U.S. website.

Like it states in the post. You cannot buy a liberty pass. If you received an email asking for this, it is a SCAM and should be deleted!

I have two questions 1) do they have to pay for there air fight back to the states when they are overseas 2) do they to pay a fee for there retirement to be process before they leave where they are being deported from to come back to the state 3) do they have to pay for the Liberty pass to leave and come home for good

In regards to the first question, if they are coming home on leave from the Military from an overseas assignment such as Germany or other OCONUS location, yes they have to buy their own plane ticket. If they are coming home from a war zone for R&R (which is no longer granted due to deployment now lasting shorter than a year) then no they do not pay to for the flight.

As for your second question regarding retirement, there is no fee that they pay to do their retirement paperwork. They military will pay to move them back to their home of record upon retirement or upon ETSing (leaving the military).

For your third question, the above post explains that you cannot buy a liberty pass and what a liberty pass is, so no they do not pay for a liberty pass.

Do US Military base in Ukraine charge Admin Fee to comes home when he applies leave? he will send to mission in war zone if he does not come out with 1,500 USD to pay the admin fee. Sounds like you are talking to a scammer. I would cease all contact. Passes do not cost money nor do they require a bank account. While it is true you need a bank account for retirement checks, an actual servicemember will already have a bank account as bank accounts are required to receive pay from the military, so there is no reason why a real servicemember would ask you to set one up.

    Hi Marleen
I have a question for you. I too have been talking to someone who is currently stationed in Syria. He wants to go on leave and come home to Texas. He has not asked for money but has transferred money into my account and then wants me to wire transfer it out to someone else. My gut is telling me this is a scam from reading everyone else but its a little different. He says he has to pay for his redeployment here in the US.

Is this legit? What do you think?
    Thanks
    Tami

I got the same exact thing. He has said that “we fell in love”. This guy was a doctor working for the United Nations in Ammon, Jordan. Only his Liberty Pass was $7,250 for a 3 month pass. Said that included airfare. I almost fell for it until I was going to wire transfer to some guy and not for the UN. I warn everyone don’t believe anything they say. I’ve verified it is a scam bc I googled the NATO numbers that he gave me in his email. All I can say is thank you to my bank who ID that’s is a scam!!! So thankful to my banker!

Hello πŸ‘‹πŸ½ I have been talking to this sergeant that said he is in Syria on a mission and he says he loves me and wants nothing but to be with me but asked me to write to the Head office and request emergency leave for him. So I did and they responded and asked for some info and I sent it to them. He then said his commander said there mite be a little fee for said leave. Well they responded and said that it would be $4500 for his n his replacements fee. Both him and the Head office gave me their military id #’s but I feel there is something wrong β˜ΉοΈπŸ˜”πŸ˜ž

Thank God for Google, and this article! I’d been flirting one with a guy who said he’s in the military in Yemen, and he’s desperate to get out. After several weeks of harmless conversation, he says he needs money for a Liberty pass. I jumped over to a new page and did a quick search, and BINGO, here we are.

I sent him a link to this article, and he got all upset and said “You know what, never mind.”

:-D Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

This gal claims to work for the United nations and says to come see me I have to email and ask for her permission and costs 1000 dollars for a liberty pass. As she has only served 1 of 3 years . This does not make any sense and I also give her cards for her internet to message me.

Is it true that you have to renew your Liberty pass stamp and for you to send money in order to get it renewed before you even get approved for a vacation leave?
