I finally got to knock off Mount Magazine, the Arkansas High Point during the summer of 2021 on our way back home from West Virginia. This made my fourth high point.
This is a super easy, quick hike to knock out a state high point. The drive to get up the mountain is what takes the longest as you make your way around winding curves.
There is a small parking lot across from the trailhead to park that can accommodate 4-5 cars.
The Hike to the Top of Mount Magazine
The trailhead is located directly across from the parking lot and includes an informational kiosk.
The trail is actually a loop (if you choose to make it one). We chose to just do an out and back since we were short on time (I had a 9 hour drive ahead of me) so it was only 0.8 mile instead of 1.5 miles.
Right after the informational sign at the trailhead you will come to a split, you can take either way as this is where the loop begins/ends. We chose to stay right.
The Mount Magazine trail itself is well-maintained, tree covered, and has a slight incline to the top.
There are no views anywhere along the trail or at the top, but if you are hiking this trail you are more than likely doing it just to knock off a high point anyway. For the best views, head on over to the lodge.
After a short bit, you will come to another split in the trail, stay left. If you go right you will head to some kind of maintenance building. We actually ended up going right and finding out the hard way.
Once you come to the top of Mount Magazine there is a mailbox that holds the log, a bench, a sign, and geographical marker.
