Mission Concepcion in San Antonio Texas | The Oldest Original Stone Church in the U.S.

January 27, 2017 by Nutty Hiker Last Modified: February 24, 20224 Comments

While we were in San Antonio for Christmas we decided to check out all the Missions along San Antonio’s Mission Trail. The most famous one, the Alamo, isn’t the only mission or the best preserved (in my opinion)!

There are a total of 5 missions.

The closest one to the Alamo is Mission Concepcion, which is one of the country’s oldest original stone churches. It was transferred from East Texas to where it stands today back in 1731. Other than the colorful geometric designs which have now faded, the church looks just as it did in the mid-1700s!

While this one isn’t the favorite of all my missions, it has an awe factor that is indescribable! The history of this mission is truly remarkable and you can find more information on San Antonio’s website.

Church services are still held in this church. See below for service times.

While you are in the area, check out the other missions in San Antonio.
