Hiking Sailor & the mysterious rock formation

October 29, 2014 by Nutty Hiker Last Modified: February 18, 20224 Comments

Oh man I woke up this morning TIRED! Actually I can’t say tired, because after about 5 minutes I was awake. I think my alarm went off as I was in a deep sleep. I had that, what’s going on and confused mind, going on. You know, you feel like you can’t open your eyes and you’re just dead weight.

Anyway, this morning I dressed as a hiking Sailor Sweetheart. At least that is what the package called it. As I was putting it on, all I could hear was my Marine friends repeating the word Squid over and over. I could hear my husband say, why can’t you dress as a Soldier sweetheart. Fact is, I have had this costume for several years. I bought it as an end of year clearance item, and my grandfather served in the Navy during WWII. Personally, I think I looked more like a cheerleader. Probably because of the pleated skirt.

So as I was hiking, I veered off the trail onto another trail I had yet to ever go on (I do that sometimes). When I stumbled upon a rock formation that had burnt wood and ash in front of it. To add to the creepy factor even more, it was in a heavily wooded area that looked like a scene out of Friday the 13th.

This isn’t the first time I have stumbled across something like this. There are several areas in the park where you can find rocks stacked on to each other like this. I assume someone was bored on a hike (or run) one day and decided to play “build a rock tower”. They were more than likely built as markers on the trail. This one however, there was no need for it. Plus what kind of crazy story would I have to tell if it were just a trail marker? =)

Just an FYI for those that don’t really know, these are called cairns.

You look cute! I think I like that outfit the best. By they way, most of the men on my side of our family that served in the military were in the Navy. Not sure why that is… Anyway, that is creepy about the rocks on the Halloween Eve. Maybe witch rituals…[insert scary music here]. =)

Norma that one is on Sidewinder trail. The trail that starts near where the fishing pier (well what was a fishing pier) is and runs along the road.
