Q. Hello Bridget! Will BAH increase when we marry? I am newly married to a US Marine and currently he is in SOI west MCT. I have read that his base pay will increase because we are married, but I am unsure about BAH. Is that only when they have been assigned to their PDS/PCS? Or am I supposed to get it currently while he is still going through training? Also, would living with me parents affect any of this? Thank you for the help.
First, let me start off with a big congratulations on your marriage!
To answer your questions, his base pay does not increase due to him getting married or gaining a dependent. The only thing that will increase is his BAH; and it is usually not much at all.
Before any of that can happen though, he will need to add you to his DEERS. Once you have been added in DEERS then his BAH will go from the BAH without dependents rate to the BAH with dependents rate.
Living with your parents will not affect his BAH rate unless he is at his duty station as a geographical bachelor (he would need to let the Military know you are living elsewhere).
However, since he is currently at school en-route to his first duty station, the BAH will go off of where his dependents (you) live. So the BAH rate will be determined by the zip code your parents live in (he will need to provide this to the finance office).
Hope this helps to answer your question, and welcome to the family =)
