Portrait Session Tips

Below are some tips to help you have a pleasurable photography session experience and to help you get the most out of your session with us.

Get a good nights rest. This is important for all parties that will take part in the photo session. Nothing is worse than trying to photograph between yawns and droopy puffy eyes.

Clothing. Avoid primary/bright colors, busy patterns, and/or stripes. You want the picture to focus on you, not your clothes. If you have booked a group session, try to have everyone match by wearing the same color shirt and same color pants, style is not important, but matching the color is. Make sure you have coordinated your entire outfit, from your hair accessories to your shoes and everything in between. Those who are concerned with their body size should remember that darker clothes create an optical illusion of being thinner.

FOR OUTDOORS: Mid-Dark tone clothing such as Blue jeans, black/dark brown. dark red shirts, black / dark brown shoes,

STUDIO: We offer a range of background colors and thus you can choose any color to wear. Just make sure it is coordinated.

Glasses. If you wear glasses, it is best to avoid wearing them during your session. Lens can create glares when photos are taken, and can ruin the entire picture. Although some techniques can be used to remove or minimize the glare, we cannot guarantee it. If you must wear them, consider removing the lens for your session.

Get In The Groove. If you have a favorite CD or a mix CD, bring it and we will play it during your session. Listening to your favorite music can help you “get into the groove” and relax. Unless you are coming in for solely a professional business head shot, stiff will make your photographs look cold and grim. The best subject is a relaxed subject!

Props. Although I do have props for pictures, you should consider bringing any that you would like to use or that have a special meaning for you, your family, and/or your children. Such as a toy, stuffed animal, favorite blanket, etc… Something that would allow me to personalize the experience and photo just for you.

Maternity. Schedule your session between 34-38 weeks of pregnancy. Make sure that the waist band of your pants are worn below your belly and away from the skin for at least 1.5 hours before the session to prevent indention’s in your belly that could possibly show up in the photographs.

Newborns. It is best to schedule newborn portrait sessions within 2 weeks of birth since this is the period in which they sleep the most. Feed your newborn an hour before your session. Feeding less than an hour before could cause spit up accidents. Feeding later than an hour before, could cause them to get cranky and hungry during the session.

Children. Children can be stubborn especially when they are not well rested and hungry. Make sure your child gets a good nights sleep and has recently been fed. Do not allow them to have a heavy meal for at least 1 hour before the session starts. This will allow time for their food to settle.
