PCS: Notify the schools, check….kinda

March 22, 2011 by Nutty Hiker Last Modified: February 17, 20225 Comments

Part of PCSing it to notify the schools so yesterday I contacted my children’s school to find out exactly how this move will affect their schooling. Here is the problem that has me worried; school lets out here June 17th (5 days later than expected due to snow days). Our move date is set for June 2nd. The new school system school lets out June 17th as well. However, by the time we get down there, DEERS updated, and physicals done, the new school will already be out for the summer, so transferring them from this school to the new school is not an option.

Thankfully, I was told by the Elementary school, that the teachers will be informed in order to make sure their grades are turned in no later than June 1st. However, their report cards would not be ready at that time, so that would need to be mailed to me. Great!

The Middle School, however, has no idea. They said it should not count against us since we are moving due to Military orders, however; they would need to check with the school board to see how this will be handled since typically the last weeks of school are when exams are given.

We’ve never had to deal with this before, as we have always moved during the summer time prior to this PCS. This PCS veteran spouse just got checked, in the end though, I will be giving the checkmate! Grrr…I am ready to get this over with!

Couldn’t you stay the extra two weeks and meet up with Jerry after they get out of school?

I could if I was made of money =) But a 1500 rent here along with the outrageous electric, water, trash, and sewage bill, in addition to paying all of that as well for the new area and not having any furniture here because it gets picked up May 31st, plus I have to be there to accept the shipment of goods since Jerry won’t be able to (this is a BRAC move not a regular PCS move). So staying here and meeting up with him later is not an option. Nor would he be able to come back up here to get us.

I thought about getting a hotel, but still run into the money issue, and no one being able to sign for the household shipment of goods at Fort Lee. So they would still end up missing a week anyway. I know the school has to accommodate us because this is a military move, but with this being a training post there is not a lot of permanent party here so they aren’t use to dealing with Military issues. The Elementary school isn’t a problem. They said they will have all grades done by June 1st for them and have already informed their teachers. The Middle School is the one with issues at this point, with not knowing how to handle this issue.

I moved when I was in the 3rd grade to Arizona. It was the best thing for me. I believe. I learned to socialize better and sense i didn’t know any one it gave me a chance to get my grades up. One of two things are going to happen, they will adapt well, or they will fight you every step of the way. They are kids. Nothing to worry about, I wouldn’t put to much thought into it, because they will learn to grow into their new environment. But as a mom I see were your coming from. My said I changed positively when we moved. Hopefully you’ll have the same luck.

Oh I am not worried about the kids. This will be the 3rd time they have moved to a new school because of a PCS. I am worried about the way the school is going to handle it being so very close to the end of the school year.

Thankfully though they have said that they would just turn in their grades early, so there shouldn’t be an issue now. Whew! Every other time was during the summer.
