Making a College Dorm Checklist & Checking it Twice

July 29, 2021 by Nutty Hiker Last Modified: March 21, 2023Leave a Comment

I made a college dorm checklist and am checking it twice! Well, Clayton (aka Bubbanator aka Starblazer) is just two short weeks from heading off to college. My hiking buddy is leaving me to pursue his Astrophysics degree at Arizona State University. To make sure he has everything he needs to succeed I did what I’m good at, making a checklist, this time it is a college dorm checklist LMAO! Things were getting crazy trying to keep up with what we bought and what he might need, so I made a college dorm room checklist after a lot of research on what he may need or should bring.

I realized other parents may find it useful as well, so I made it all pretty like and converted my college dorm checklist into a downloadable pdf (located below).

Glad we came home

We should be on the Appalachian Trail right now, but honestly, I am glad we got off. Before we headed out to West Virginia to start our hike after he graduated I thought I had everything done and ready for him to leave when we returned in August. I was wrong….dead wrong. If we had waited to come back the first week of August like we originally planned, there would have been no way we would have gotten everything that needed to be done in time.

It has taken almost a month, but we finally have everything and it is packed in boxes waiting to be loaded into the truck so we can make that 17-hour drive to ASU. We are spending these next two weeks finishing up the “tasks” that his college requires to be complete before the first day of school. I had no clue they had to complete a million tasks after being accepted lol. Plus, dealing with the VA for his education benefits that he will be using.

It’s been an exhausting summer, I am super happy we spent the month of June traveling and having an adventure (even if it wasn’t on the Appalachian Trail) before coming back home to deal with the pre-college stuff. I think we needed that mom-son time together one last time. Ok, well maybe I was the one that needed it the most LOL! Although I know one day when he is older, he will look back and cherish that time as well.

My plans after dropping him off

After I drop him off at college, I plan to climb both Texas and Oklahoma high points so I can mark those off the list, before coming back home and planning my next adventure! Texas will be the most brutal out of the two, simply because I will have to start the hike at 4 am due to the time of year it is here in Texas. The goal is to be done by noon and I think 8 hours should be plenty of time, which includes a 1-hour break at the top for pictures and breakfast. Anyway, keep an eye on the blog and social media accounts for that trip!

For now….it’s time for me to pack my gear and suitcase and triple-check his college dorm checklist lol!

If you have a kiddo heading off to college for the first time and have no idea what to bring, feel free to download the college dorm checklist below that I made and tweak it to your own needs. I included blank spaces to write items you may need that my son didn’t. I also included Amazon links to some of the items we bought. Disclaimer, they are affiliate links so I will receive a small commission if you purchase through that link at no extra cost to you. It’s one of the ways I am able to keep this blog alive and I greatly appreciate your support!
