What I Liked
Rechargeable: With any lighting, I much prefer rechargeable over replaceable batteries simply because it is much easier to recharge instead of carrying around extra batteries (or storing extra batteries). It’s one less thing to worry about, especially since I have multiple ways to recharge items even if the power goes out. The included 5000 mAh battery, allows this flashlight to run for a seriously long time in between charges.
Brightness: At 1600 lumens, this thing is blinding when on Turbo! Even on low at 150 lumens, it does a great job lighting up the area.
Long runtime: To test out the runtime, I fully charged the Fenix PD36R Rechargeable Flashlight then put it on turbo and let it sit. It ran for a total of 10 hours. After a couple of hours, it “downshifted” to a lower lumen but continued to run until the battery completely ran out of juice.
Dual Body Clip: The clip allows you to clip the flashlight onto your pants or belt both right side up and upside down. What this means is that there really is no more fumbling with the clip. Either way the flashlight is pointed, it will clip easily on your belt.
Quick recharge: After fully discharging the high-capacity 5000 mAh battery, I plugged it into my Anker Power Port Mini which is a 5V/2.4A port. It took a total of 3 hours to fully charge, much quicker than stated by the company. A very nice surprise for sure.
Light distance: The light distance on the turbo setting is stated to be 283 meters. While I did not measure to verify this, I can say that it did a great job of lighting up the inside of my house and while out on the trail in the woods. It does get hot while on Turbo mode and will lower the voltage automatically to keep it from overheating, so that is something to keep in mind.
Waterproof: Rated at IP68 it can go up to 2 meters underwater, which means I definitely don’t have to worry about getting it wet if I am using it in the rain.
What to Improve
Red Light Function: I would really like to see a red light function for use when you want to keep your night vision.
Overall Impression of the Fenix PD36R Rechargeable Flashlight
The Fenix PD36R Rechargeable Flashlight is a great compact flashlight that is perfect for camping, bug-out bags, household use, and pretty much everywhere else! Keep one in your car, home, camping kit, or a bug-out bag. It only needs maintenance charging every four months and is small enough to store just about anywhere, but big enough to not feel like it will slip out of your hand. You won’t have to worry about dings and drops with its rugged high-strength oxidation-resistance aluminum body and its 1-meter impact resistance rating.
