Dear Military Spouse: How Do I Get On My Fiancés Orders?

August 10, 2017 by Nutty Hiker Last Modified: April 4, 2018Leave a Comment

My fiancé is currently in AIT. He has recently received his orders to Hawaii. We understand that in order for me to be able to travel with him when he needs to report, that I would need to be on his orders. We plan on going down to the courthouse and getting married as soon as possible. So, how do I get on my fiances orders? And exactly how long does it take to be put on someone’s orders? We are currently in the month of July of 2017 and his report date is November 11, 2017.

Sincerely,
C. Cooper

First, let me congratulate you on your upcoming marriage!

In regards to your question “How do I get on my fiances orders?”, as for orders, if they have already been cut, he would have to get them amended which could take a while. Even then there is no guarantee you would be added to them as it depends on where he will be stationed. You stated Hawaii, so there shouldn’t be an issue getting you added. The best scenario is to already be married and have you in DEERS before his orders are cut. Just be aware that even then, that does not mean that you will get to go with him if he is being stationed somewhere that is an unaccompanied tour.

In your situation though, where his orders have already been cut he would need to get them amended as soon as you are married and placed in DEERS (you will have to be placed in DEERS before he can have them amended) which from the time frame you have given, sounds like you might be out of time to have that done before he reports.

There really is no set-in-stone time frame on how long it takes to have orders amended (to have you put on them). Basically, don’t count on him being able to amend his orders in time for you to move with him. Welcome to the Military, the land of uncertainty =)
