Darn Tough Socks; Are They Worth It?

I’ve been a user since 2017 when I saw someone talking about them in a backpacking group I am in.

Until then, I had only ever worn your generic white cotton socks…for everything…even hiking! Then I got my first pair of Darn Tough socks. I ponied up, spent the $20 for a single pair, and hoped for the best. They come with a lifetime warranty, which at the time was odd to me. Socks that have a lifetime warranty? How is this company still in business? This has to be a joke!

My first pair arrived, I tried them on…in the middle of a Texas summer…and wore them for the day at the fire station.

I was shocked! My feet stayed dry and they felt not as fatigued (that is the only way I know to describe it). I didn’t expect either one. The entire reason I got them was that they were supposed to prevent blisters and “cotton kills”. It’s what all the cool “kids” were wearing as well.

Needless to say, I purchased a second pair, then a third. I also added pairs to my Amazon wishlist. Before I knew it, I was wearing Darn Tough socks all the time and had thrown away every other pair of socks I had, except for my Injinji socks (toe socks) which I had also discovered during this time.

Side Note: Dear Darn Tough, if you are reading this, please make toe socks!

Is the Darn Tough Warranty for Real?

Fast forward to May of 2022 and my very first pair of socks had a hole in them. It was time to see if their lifetime warranty was legit! I should mention that these pair of socks were 5 years old, almost to the day, and had well over several thousand miles on them.

I should have taken a picture before sending them in. I am completely kicking myself in the rear (as I wear a pair of darn tough socks on my feet) for not taking one.

The process was pretty simple. Just head over to their website, fill out the warranty form, print it off, stick it in the package with your socks and mail the socks back to them (at your expense, which for me was about $3).

Once they process your claim, they send you a coupon code to use on their website to get another pair; they also pay for the return shipping back to you. So, the only money you are out is the postage it costs to mail the socks to them.

From the time I mailed them until the time they processed my claim was eight days.

I received an email with a code to use on and promptly picked me out another pair. Shipping was free. It cost me nothing for the replacement pair.

Who is Darn Tough?

If you are new to hiking and outdoor gear, you may be asking yourself who is ? Well, they are an American company based in Vermont that makes some pretty darn tough socks! Just to clarify, the socks are also made here in the USA, right there in Vermont! They aren’t one of these companies that are here in the USA but then source all their manufacturing to other companies. They truly are a 100% American-made company.

Their socks come with an unconditional lifetime warranty. That means if they ever get a hole, they will give you a brand new pair at no charge.

Their socks are made of a merino wool blend. Don’t worry, there is no itch involved. Their unique blend allows for an incredibly comfortable and tough sock. It really is hard to explain just how comfortable these socks are (even in the Texas summer heat), the only way you will see what I am talking about is if you buy a pair and try them for yourself!

Just in case you thought I was kidding about being the only socks I wear full time now (minus when I wear toe socks because as of today’s date they do not make toe socks), here’s a lovely picture of all my socks (minus the pair I just had to send in).

I have also transitioned my husband over to darn tough socks (he is a mechanic) as we were having to replace his socks, what seemed like every month, due to holes. He was skeptical at first as well about wearing “wool” in the middle of the summer in a hot bay while grease is flying everywhere; but, he too is a convert. He’s had darn tough socks for about three years now and I have yet had to replace a pair.
