Beware of slashed tires

January 17, 2015 by Nutty Hiker Last Modified: February 18, 202212 Comments

I did a 10 mile hike today and it was awesome! The weather was perfect. Sunny and 70! It was so nice to feel the sun again!

Sunny Day at Dana Peak Park near Harker Heights Texas

The last mile back all I could think about what eating a juicy fat cheeseburger! That was until I got to the SUV and saw a flat tire. I called back to the house and had my daughters boyfriend bring me the 4 way and floor jack. The jack that came with the SUV just wasn’t going to work, due to how I was parked. While we were changing the tire, a guy pulled up and asked if we needed help and if my tire was slashed. I said I don’t think so (turned out it was). He said ok because he had his tires slashed out here just this past week, and several other people have also had their tires slashed out here over the past couple of weeks.

Police reports were filed from what he said. One woman came back to a freshly slashed tire (the air was still coming out of it and it wasn’t flat yet). Which means she just missed the person with the knife (or whatever sharp object they were using)!

So if you hike/bike/run at Dana Peak Park, please be very vigilant, and beware of slashed tires! If they are willing to slash tires, who knows what else they are willing to do! If your tires do get slashed, please remember to file a police report, so they will have a record of this! Even if it’s just a flat tire, look closely. I thought I had run over something, nope there was a puncture in the sidewall of my almost brand new tire!

UPDATE: I would like to thank Emily Collins and KCEN for covering this story and to help get the word out.

It would have to be a private citizen to set up cameras. Doubt the police dept or Army Corps of Engineers would do it. I was thinking about getting some for inside the car, but I’d have to buy several just to cover 360 degrees. I think I will play on google later and see if I can find something.

I know! I have a feeling it’s one of the homeowners in the subdivision across from the park. I could be wrong, who knows. I just hope they get caught!
