Things have been quiet around here, as I had taken some time off to spend with my husband before he deployed. I am so glad that I will be back to work next week, but in the mean time, I thought I would share with you something that I have decided to do to honor those with my husband who are deployed (and I hope you will join in too)!
Before the 3CR RSS Soldiers deployed, I had started hiking a couple of times a week for both health reasons and just a way to unwind. I made the comment that I would hike 500 miles in the 9 months they were gone, and I was called crazy. So just to show them how crazy I am, I upped it to 1000 miles in 9 months. I had posted this to my personal Facebook page and to my amazement several friends and family asked if they could log miles to. One said I should create a Facebook Page for it so everyone could send in their miles, so I did =). I now have people from all over the US participating. The group goal is to hike, run, or walk 7785 miles. I have a total of 3 logs going:
1) My personal log of a 1000 mile goal
2) Out of town log (for those that live out of the central Texas area and want to send in miles) with a goal of 7785 miles
3) In town log with a goal of 7785 miles
UPDATE: Those deployed decided to participate so they now have a log as well with a goal of 7785 miles!
There is now a competition between those that live out-of-town and those that live in town to see who can reach the goal first. So if you would like to log miles and send them in or for those that aren’t interested in logging miles, but would like to support us by keeping us motivated, please come on over to Facebook and like the Facebook Page =)
Expect to see photos from my hikes here on the blog!
FAQ’s
I’ve been getting several questions, so I thought I would make one post for all of them. If you have any other questions, please feel free to comment below
Do we have to hike/walk with you in order for miles to be counted?
Nope! Just hike, walk, or run and keep track of your miles, then come to the page and post your miles for the day and let me know if you are in town or out of town so, I know which log to put your miles in!
Where do you hike/walk?
I hike at Dana Peak Park and other parks in the mornings and walk at different area parks in the evenings (this allows those with kiddos in strollers to join me).
What times do you hike/walk?
My hikes currently take place Monday thru Friday, the time varies. They are anywhere from 2.5-15 miles long and last anywhere from 40 minutes-5 hours. If you want to hike with me, just send me an email.
Can I hike/walk with you?
Absolutely! I would love to have you join me! Just let me know the night before you plan on hiking or walking with me, just to double check where I will be!
What counts for miles?
Any activity that keeps your feet on the ground (hiking, walking, running, jogging, etc…). I even turn on the mapmyfitness app on my phone to log how far I mow the yard.) Going with the notion that our soldiers are over there with their feet on the ground walking.
How do we notify you of our miles?
Simply post them to the correct blog post or post them to the Facebook Page. Make sure to let me know if you are in town or out of town if you post to the Facebook page, so I know which log to put them in. If I have liked your comment on Facebook, it means I added it to the log (although I will try and comment as well).
Why are you doing this?
Before they deployed I had taken up hiking as a way to get back in shape and help my mind relax. Shortly before they left, I decided that I would hike 1000 miles and do it before they came back. I was called crazy I told my friends and family of my plan and they said they wanted to join in, and one suggested I start a page, so others could join too. Therefore, there is now a group goal to hike/run/walk 7785 miles, which is the distance from Fort Hood to there. There are two log books, one for those that live out of town and those that live here in the area, and it’s beginning to look like a competition of who can reach the 7785 goal first!
Can anyone participate?
Absolutely! Just like our page and post your miles! And while you’re at it, share our page with your friends! Even if they don’t log miles we would love to have them support us, by liking and commenting on statuses and posts!
What area do you consider “in town”?
Any place within a 60 mile radius of Fort Hood (unless your are traveling, in that case you still live in the area, so you will still be counted as “in town”).
How can I make sure to receive a notification of every time you post?
For the Blog: Subscribe to my blog by entering your email address at the end of the page in the footer section =)
For Facebook: Simply hover over the liked button at the top of the page (if you are on a desktop) and make sure “get notifications” is checked. This will notify you each time I post, which is typically once or twice a day.

Yesterday 7/4 I walked 5.1 miles
Nutty Hiker says
Just entered it into the log! You are walking more than I do per day…I will need to change that! =) I think I am going to start doing morning hikes and evening walks!
Alicia Putman says
Well a big part of mine is at work too but I am walking.

I don’t see Mikie Taylor & Dave on the list! I think they need to participate…just saying :) –
Nutty Hiker says
I think they need to as well!!!!!

BTW, Rita VF (part of the Van Fossen Family with Bill VF) did 3.3 today – Bill will hopefully get out later tonight with the full moon.
Mikie Taylor says
Does mowing about 3 acres count cause that’s what I’m fixing to do. Not sure how many miles that is. Actually my part with the push mower is only about 1 acre. Dave sits on his “orange throne” and mows about 2-1/2 acres. I do need to do some real walking soon though. Gotta get in shape before Sturgis! :)
Rita Shea-Van Fossen says
If I was there I would lend you my GPS watch I use. The average person walks about 3 miles an hour – so use that as a guide. Your daughter is the judge, but I would say it counts for the push mower, not for the “orange thrown”. Enjoy Sturgis!!
Nutty Hiker says
Mom download mapmyfitness to your phone. And then just do record workout when you mow and then stop the workout when you’re done. It will tell you how far you walked when mowing and how many calories burned. That’s what I did the other day when I mowed.
Nutty Hiker says
Mapmyfitness is what I use. Let’s me listen to the music on my phone too :)
Nutty Hiker says
Oh and yes the push lawn mower counts….him riding on his throne doesn’t lol
