Dell City, Texas sits about 45 miles from Guadalupe Mountains National Park and is the 2nd closest city if you need ice, groceries, or gas.
According to their website the population is around 500 and they also have 2 grocery stores, 2 gas stations, video rental store, 2 restaurants, 1 fast food joint, 1 auto parts store (I believe it was NAPA), 1 feed store, 1 home decor store, 1 hardware store, and 2 farm supply stores.
Unfortunately, I don’t think their website has been updated in a very long while. While there is an auto parts store, there is only 1 grocery store (which is more like a convenience store), 1 gas station that doesn’t even have an attendant (you pay at the pump only), and 1 cafe. It appeared everything else had been shut down. Also the population according to the 2014 census is now 336.
As far as towns go, Dell City is still relatively young and was founded in the 1940’s but the population is now dwindling and slowly it appears to be fading away.
In other words, it’s my kind of town. I miss that small town living. Where everyone knows everyone else. Where there isn’t a fast food place on every corner. The simpler life.
I really enjoyed driving around this little town (which took about a whopping 5 minutes) when we would come to stock up on ice and groceries while camping out at Guadalupe Mountain National Park.
Their playground even has the slides from my childhood. Remember the metal ones that would burn you as you slid all the way down?! So you know I had to take a picture of that!
As I went through all the pictures I took from our 2016 Road Trip, I have realized that I only snapped one while in Dell City. For those that were wondering, yes, me and my husband talked about buying land just outside of town going towards the Salt Dunes as there were some For Sale signs =)
Tips
There are no hotels. If you plan on visiting you will need to either camp at Guadalupe Mountains National Park or find a hotel in one of the bigger cities (such as El Paso).
The gas pumps are only open during the day (at least when we visited). Keep that in mind if you plan to visit or need gas.
The grocery store closes at 6pm I believe. So again, if you need groceries (mostly simple staple items) or ice, you will need to make sure to get there during the day.
