TrailFork Meal Kits Review

June 22, 2018 by Nutty Hiker Last Modified: May 11, 2020Leave a Comment

This post sponsored by TrailFork.

So, I found a new company that makes meal kits for outdoor activities (such as hiking and backpacking of course)! I was even more excited when then sent me a kit to try out for free!

What caught my eye about this company is their packaging is all 100% compostable. Of course, that means that you cannot pour water into the bag to cook the meal, instead you have to pour the meal into the pot of boiling water to cook. They are also Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten Free, and Paleo friendly. I personally don’t follow any of those diets or eating habits (whatever you would call them lol) but if something comes repacked for me that is healthier than the absolute crap I tend to eat, then I am all for it!

Something else that caught my attention with this company is that they will customize an entire day of meals just for you. Tell them what you like or don’t like and for a flat fee they will send you a days worth of meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) customized just for you. Of course, you can also order their pre-packaged meals as well on their website.

About TrailFork

Located in Boulder, Colorado TrailFork was started in 2017 by three women who were looking for something good to eat. They create custom-sized  custom menus in compostable packaging.

My Thoughts

I love that the packaging is compostable and that these meals can be custom made to your taste or health needs. I mean what other meal kit company do you know that does that!?

They sent me their most popular meal kit, Paleoats, to try out. I will say that I assumed it was oatmeal, however after reading the ingredients I was feeling a little better about giving this a taste test drive. The ingredients are hemp seeds, chia seeds, cashews, banana chips, walnuts, coconut milk, salt, cinnamon, and brown sugar; basically everything I love!

Unfortunately I couldn’t get past the first bite. I did not like the texture and the flavor was not what I expected at all. I thought after reading the ingredients that it would be sweeter, but it wasn’t really sweet at all.

I am one of those weird people that doesn’t like granola bars and the texture reminded me of a granola bar, just in “finer” form (for lack of a better word). I followed the directions for rehydrating, but feel like maybe I should have let it sat longer? I’m not sure. I just couldn’t get past the texture of it. I gave it to my husband who was ok with the texture of it, he just felt it needed more flavoring.

So I guess it really just depends on your taste buds and what you like. For me personally, I did not like it, but that doesn’t mean that you won’t! I would love to give their customized day meals a try though, so I can tell them what I like and don’t like and hopefully have a better outcome, because I do love their entire business model!
