Pinhoti Trail Day 37: The Trail is a River

February 13, 2025 by Nutty Hiker Last Modified: January 27, 2026Leave a Comment

Today we start our way back to Cave Spring from Dalton. It’s still misting and lightly raining, but nothing like it has been the past two days.

The trail, however, has mostly turned into a river.

We did start our day with a little bit of a view. There were still some clouds mixed in, but it was better than being completely socked in!

The trail today was absolutely beautiful (well, until it turned into a river). We spent much of the day up on the ridge and had great views as we hiked along.

The trail’s layout was the best part because it showed us where we came from (you’ll see what I mean in the video).

The last 3.5 miles of the trail were completely flooded and resembled a creek.

We did our best to try and avoid getting our shoes wet since it was (and did) get down to the mid-20s overnight, but then the water crossings came.

I no longer had camp shoes (they broke and I had yet to get any more), so that meant I would be crossing barefoot. There were so many water crossings heading into camp that I opted to just keep my shoes off.

Right before we got to camp, there was a large rock on the trail that I did not see, and I ended up kicking it barefoot. I thought I broke three toes but wouldn’t know for sure until my foot thawed out and I could feel it.

It turned out to be a wonderful day of hiking, rough with the water on the trail and all the rocks, but still a good day. We ended the day with sunshine!
