Making the Husband Climb a Tree: Our Jan 8, 2017 Hike

January 8, 2017 by Nutty Hiker Last Modified: February 25, 202210 Comments

Today, I, the husband, and my youngest son (13) went on a nice 6-mile hike out at Dana Peak Park. When we started out it was a chill 37 degrees but warmed up to 48 by the time we were done. This is why I always dress in layers when hiking in cooler/colder weather!

Anyway, back to my story…while we were hiking we decided to do some geocaching and originally planned to hike about 13 miles. However, we got a later start than I wanted and I knew hubby had duty tonight at the firehouse.

We decided to start at the very beginning of the trails and parked at the fishing pier trailhead. This area had a massive fire a little over a year ago so I knew the trails would be iffy and we may have to make our own to get where we needed to go.

The Fixer Upper

Our first stop took us to the “Fixer Upper”. That’s the name of the geocache. You can see why it is called the fixer-upper.

Making our first stop on our 6-mile hike and geocache trip. This is the first geocache called the Fixer Upper!

After finding the geocache (and leaving some swag) we decided to play “What kind of car is it and how did it get here?” We never could come to an agreement so we will just let the people of the internet decide.

We continued on the trail to find the next geocache. Unfortunately, because of the previous fire, we had to make our own trail and boy was that fun. After searching for about 20 minutes we gave up the search for the 2nd geocache and headed to the third one.

High in a Tree

The third geocache was in a huge container. Unfortunately, it didn’t have much swag, but I made sure to leave some! Oh if you are a geocacher in my area scroll past the next picture and do not read the following sentence.

Making my husband climb a tree to get a geocache.

This geocache was placed high in a tree and required climbing. Making my husband climb a tree wasn’t difficult. My husband started climbing without any prompting from me and then out came the following words, “I can’t believe I am climbing this tree, I never climbed trees”.

Wait. What?

It was then that I realized that me, the only girl there, is the only one that has climbed trees before (and a lot of them). That was my favorite pastime as a kid. Then I remembered he wasn’t from Texas, so that explained everything.

I am happy to say, he did it like a pro and it did not require a trip to the emergency room.

We continued on our hike and after the geocaches were all found in the area, that’s when my husband started complaining about hiking…like clockwork!

I would have climbed it in a heartbeat. That was my favorite thing to do as a kid, and I was up in a tree almost every day! Whenever your “Big Nana” came outside looking for me, she was usually looking up in the trees (ours and all the neighbors’!) LOL!

She would yell at me and Rhett for climbing the one out front lol. Probably because it was still growing.

Sounds lovely. I’m from Australia where it is a long hot summer right now so to hear about winter hiking makes me feel slightly cooler!

I wish I could say it stayed like that, but the next day the high was in the low 80’s lol. I live in Texas so we never really have a winter except for maybe a couple of days out of the year.

We have done a lot of geocaching and it was so much fun. The ones in cemeteries are cool. We also did a lot while we were out camping.

We love visiting old cemeteries and Geocaching has helped us find old cemeteries lol! I am still trying to get to my first 100 finds so I can start placing geocaches. I am halfway there!

I love geocaching, it’s so fun! I have an app on my phone and my kids love going on “treasure hunts”.

We do too as do my kids (and husband, actually he is really into it). We also use the geocaching app on our phone unless we don’t have phone service then we load them onto our handheld GPS. We are working on finding our 100th geocache so we can start placing them too!
