Fort Lee, Virginia

April 26, 2012 by Nutty Hiker Last Modified: October 20, 2016Leave a Comment

Fort Lee is located in Prince George County, Virginia and is home to the Army Logistics University, Defense Commissary Agency, U.S. Army Ordnance School, U.S. Army Quartermaster School and the U.S. Army Transportation School.

Basically, it is mostly AIT and ALC/SLC. The housing waitlist (due to this being mostly a training post) is not long and the housing is fairly new. When we left in 2013 there were still a couple of older homes, but for the most part, they were all new.

Fort Lee is small compared to other posts and as such does not have a lot of amenities. The amenities it does have is typically ran over by AIT soldiers. This includes the mall located outside the gate. Speaking of the mall, save yourself the trouble and go to a different one!

LIVING

Best Area’s To Live Off Post:

Prince George – This is a somewhat rural type area that is right outside of the gate but still close to things. Laid back with farm land, but also has some areas with sub divisions that seem pretty new.
Colonial Heights –  If you want to live close to shopping and dining this is where you should hang your hat. It is about 5 minutes from the gate.

Area’s to think twice about:

Petersburg – Even though it’s a rather large city, and some areas are indeed nice, most have a high crime rate.
Hopewell – Right outside another gate. It’s a hit a miss as far as where to live goes.

HAIR & BEAUTY

Hair Salon: J.C. Penny at Southpark Mall. Ask for Kim! She does an amazing job with not only cuts but coloring!

FOOD

Sushi: It’s hard to find great sushi, and I am a sushi snob, as in no I will not eat sushi from the grocery store. Wabi Sabi is a sushi & martini bar located in downtown Petersburg. The sushi is amazing as well as their food menu items which include’s jerk chicken, crab cake sandwiches, and several other items! The crab cake sandwiches with sweet potato fries are to die for!

Hibachi – Just like sushi, I find I am also a hibachi snob. Right outside the gate of Fort Lee is Kanpai of Japan in Hopewell. The food is amazing and their portion sizes are HUGE!

OUTDOOR / HIKING

Pocahontas State Park – The park offers over 64 miles of hiking/biking trails as well as fishing, boating, swimming, and camping. There is also an Aquatic Center, which has a toddler pool, fountain wet deck, three-foot and five-foot-deep leisure pools, an activity pool and two tubular water slides. Rowboats, paddleboats, kayaks, paddleboards and canoes may be rented at the boathouse on the 225-acre Swift Creek Lake during the summer.
