Every time I look at this image I just giggle. It by far is my favorite shot of 2013. My husband dubbed it “Real Life”. Funny thing about this photo is this is not posed! I was trying to get them all posed when this happened and I just had to get it on “film”.
We were at the very end of the session, trying to get one last family shot. We had been out there for over an hour and the kids were just “done”.
What you can’t tell from this photo is that they are actually standing in front of the bathrooms. There was a door to the right and a vent above them (both of which I photoshopped out). I loved the stone used for the wall, so I wanted to see what I could do. Sometimes even the crappiest (pun intended) can make for a beautiful backdrop.
Getting the Shot
I didn’t use any artificial light or reflectors, instead, I found what is called “open shade” and used it to my advantage. I was using my Canon 7D with my 24-105mm L series lens. Shot at 32mm with an ISO of 400 and shutter speed of 1/250 with a focal length of 5.0.
