Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi Texas

February 16, 2017 by Nutty Hiker Last Modified: February 25, 202217 Comments

As part of our 2016 Texas Road Trip, we decided to head to Corpus Christi. This decision was mostly for the USS Lexington since my husband has never been on an aircraft carrier. While we were there we also decided to stop at the Texas State Aquarium.

Texas State Aquarium

The Texas State Aquarium is a private not-for-profit, educational organization that does not receive funding from any state or federal agency. They also operate the Texas State Aquarium’s Second Chances Wildlife Rehabilitation Program which rehabilitates and when possible, returns the animals to their natural environment. Many of the animals they take in from the gulf shore come in with problems that are directly or indirectly caused by humans.

The Texas State Aquarium opened in the summer of 1990 it has several exhibits. Some of those exhibits include an Aquatic Nursery, Dolphin Bay, Eagle Pass, Flower Gardens, Hawn Wild Flight Theater, Islands of Steel, Living Shores, Nearshore, Otter Creek, Saving Sharks, Stingray Lagoon, Swamp Tales, Tentacles, and Tortuga Cay. You can find out more about the exhibits on their website (listed below).

Our Thoughts

This is a pretty cool aquarium. At the time we visited there was a section that was under construction. It’s not as big as some other aquariums that we have visited in Texas and abroad which was a little disappointing considering with a name like Texas State Aquarium makes you think that it’s the “main” aquarium in Texas.

A cool feature is the H-E-B Splash park which is absolutely refreshing on a hot summer Texas day! So make sure you bring you and your kids a change of clothes or at least a towel!

We have Texas on our list of places to travel in the next year or two, so we are definitely going to add these stops to the list. Thanks for the recommendation!
