5 Tips for Hanging the Right Size Artwork for Your Wall (With Examples)

January 9, 2017 by Nutty Hiker Last Modified: March 3, 202227 Comments

Have you ever moved into a new home or decided to redecorate and become lost when trying to determine what the right size artwork or picture you should put and where?

Ever spend all day hanging artwork, just to get finished and realize it looks like a 2-year old hung it? Ever wonder what the right size for artwork is hanging over the sofa? Then this guide is for you!

If possible, buy your artwork or prints directly from the artist. This will typically cut out the middleman pricing (saving you money) and many use apps (such as me) that will allow them to take a picture of your wall and furniture (or you can send it to them) and then digitally place the artwork on the wall in different sizes.

An example that I created for one of my clients using such an app, is below. The picture located above the fireplace is one of my originals and can be bought from my store right here on my website!

wall sizing guide

If you are not buying artwork from an artist that uses a digital mockup of your space to help you determine the size of the print or artwork you should buy, then here are 5 tips the pros use:

Over Furniture

The artwork should be roughly 2/3 the width of the furniture piece. – Don’t put an 8×10 or 11×14 over a sofa! It will look ridiculous unless, of course, it is part of a larger collage. If you’re hanging a collage, the same principle applies.

Make sure you are placing the correct size artwork over furniture!

The bottom of the frame should be 8-10 inches above the furniture piece you are hanging it above. – You don’t want a lot of blank space showing between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the artwork.

Hallways & Other Area Walls

Hang it so it is at eye level which is roughly 57-60 inches from the floor. No one wants to break their neck trying to look at the beautiful piece, plus visitors (and yourself) will be more drawn towards anything that is at eye level (it’s just natural).

Stay consistent with the mid-point (the height in which you hang your artwork). By midpoint, I mean where the middle of your artwork hangs. If you are hanging multiple pieces together that are different sizes, choose a midpoint height on the wall and align all pieces with that height. This does not apply to collages, however, the midpoint of the collage should be the same midpoint height of all the other artwork pieces in your home (eye level).

Right and wrong way for hanging pictures. Keep midpoint consistent!

For artwork that is jumbo size (taller than 120 inches) don’t hang at eye level, instead, have the bottom edge a foot from the floor. – The reason behind this is that the midpoint of the artwork will be at eye level.

Looking for Artwork?

If you are looking for artwork to hang in your home, please visit the store here on my website. I am currently in the process of adding more pieces, so make sure you check back often! All pieces are shot by myself and you won’t find them anywhere else.

Whether you are looking for large 30×40 canvas prints or 8×10 matted prints, I have something for every decor and size room.

Use this Artwork Hanging Guide to help you determine the correct size piece of artwork or picture you should hang on your walls. 5 tips the pros use WITH examples!

Great post. I always have the hardest time hanging art. I normally place it too high (or so I’m told LOL).

That’s how I use to be as well! Or I would just place them wherever, like artwork threw up all over my wall haha!

I will hold on to the 2/3rds of furniture as a reference point for when I next art-shop.

These are such great tips! It never would have clicked to make sure that all the pictures hang in the same middle area until after I had the pictures already hung on the wall!

Same here! And that is how I use to hang pictures and artwork! Actually, I would hang them so they all were even from the top of the pieces not the middle. Looks much better now that I hang from the mid point!

I knew about hanging at eye level but didn’t know about the 2/3 size rule. After looking around my house I didn’t do to bad.

These are great tips! We could definitely use some help in getting some artwork into our house. We barely have anything, but then again we never really go out to look for artwork.
