We headed out of the shelter early this morning and started making our way to Cave Spring, where we would be picked up and taken to the historic (and haunted?) Hearn Inn (I will make a separate post specifically for that).
One thing I have noticed since coming into Georgia is that if there are any roots that stick up, the trail maintainer for this section has painted them blue, which is much appreciated! There has been less tripping going on!
The trail today was much more pleasant to hike. There weren’t nearly as many rocks as we’d encountered in Alabama, and definitely no boulder fields.

It wasn’t long before we came upon a cross next to the trail. It didn’t seem to be a grave marker or memorial, and there was no indication of its purpose or who put it there.

We saw that we would be walking around a lake today (at least that is what it looked like on the map); it looked more like a swamp than a lake to me. As we made our way around, we finally saw why the area had been turned into a swamp. Mr. Beaver was busy at work!
At the end of our day, we enjoyed a gentle climb before heading down to the trailhead for pickup.

We opted to avoid road walking into Cave Spring. There is no shoulder and lots of traffic. The locals also suggested not walking the road in or out of Cave Spring for safety reasons, so we listened =)
