Gear up, because it’s time for an announcement! We will be hiking the Greenbrier River Trail in September.
I am itching to get back on a trail to do some backpacking and Jerry needs to test out his new gear for our upcoming Appalachian Trail Thru hike in 2025 so a shakedown hike is in order.
Finding a Trail
The problem I had in trying to find a hike to do, was the fact that Jerry is still working full time, Clayton is in college, and we now have chickens. I needed a trail that we could finish in 7 days, we also needed the weather to be on the cooler side, and we needed to be close to family or friends so we could have them drop us off / pick us up and watch our truck.
It took a while, but I came across a rail-to-trail system in West Virginia that I had never heard of; The Greenbrier River Trail. It’s 81 miles long (only 77 of those miles can actually be hiked), only about 3 hours from my Mom, and hiking it in mid-September would allow us to experience cooler weather at night. Seems perfect, so I set out to learn everything I could about the trail so I could start planning.
The neat thing about this trail is that there are several campsites along the way, many of them with shelters, potable water, and toilets. The trail also runs along the river the entire way, so we will be able to filter water as needed which means not worrying about carrying more than 1L of water at a time, therefore, saving some weight.
The Plan While On Trail
I plan on doing the usual daily vlog and blog. Cell service will depend on if I post in real-time or after our trip. If service is good, I do plan on doing some TikTok and Facebook Lives, so be on the lookout for those and make sure you have notifications turned on. Jerry was able to get access to my Nutty Hiker Facebook page so we can finally start posting to that again. I still cannot do anything from my personal account (Facebook assures me they are working on it lmao).
If you have any questions about this trail, leave them for us in a comment below.
