Q. What benefits will I receive if I get married? So my boyfriend/fiance (I’m not really sure what to call him at the moment) purposed an idea to me tonight when he called. We were talking about him coming home for leave in December (he’s currently stationed in Japan and I live in Vermont) and he brought up us getting married, (we had already decided that we would be getting married when he comes home).
Now my question is what kind of benefits will I be receiving being a wife of a Marine. He and I have always talked about what us being married would mean and how things would work but we never actually talked about the benefits. I know I would get dental, vision and health insurance, but that’s about it. And I can’t seem to find anything on Google. Is there any way you can help me out? What benefits will I receive if we get married? Thank you!
That pretty much summed it up! You will get medical benefits, which means health insurance with no out-of-pocket expenses (assuming you enroll in Tricare Prime), dental, and vision. However, plan on plenty of out-of-pocket expenses with both dental and vision. Only the Military member is covered 100%.
For dependents, Tricare will only cover an eye-glass exam (no contact lens exam) and will not cover any portion of glasses or contacts. With dental, you will have to pay a monthly premium to be enrolled and there will be out-of-pocket expenses. MetLife (Tricare’s dental insurance carrier) will pay for 2 cleanings a year and one full set of x-rays every year (it may be every 2 or 3, I can’t remember off the top of my head). Everything else such as fillings, deep cleanings, crowns, etc.. only a portion is covered. How much is covered, depends on your husband’s rank.
Some other “benefits” would be life insurance (on yourself) if your husband elects it. There, of course, is also a monthly premium for that. You will also receive a Military ID card that will allow you to shop on base at the BX where everything is tax-free and will also allow you to shop at the commissary (grocery store) on the base. And of course, the biggest benefit of all…being a Marine Wife =)
Also, take a look around the site, there is a ton of information on Military life that may help you out.
Happy, errrr um possible engagement?!
