Yesterday my husband, two younger kids, and me met up with my BFF Teresa (you know the one I always make do crazy stuff), her husband and kids to hike Chalk Ridge Falls in Salado/Belton.
It’s located on the Lampasas River (on the other side of the dam) and offers several miles of hiking trails as well as beautiful waterfalls.
It has been over a year since I went hiking out there last. In fact, yesterday I realized it held a lot more trails that I originally thought and of course a lot more interesting terrain to create some nutty antics.
The terrain ranges from easy to advanced and we effectively managed to concur them all.
If you want to learn more about Chalk Ridge Falls, read my post about it here.
I planned on doing an easy miler, maybe two, since we had the kids and our husbands who tend to whine. In fact, I even told Teresa don’t worry about packing a lunch “we will be in and out of there pretty quick,” I said.
I don’t know why she listened to me; she should know better by now.
We did almost 4 miles, which lasted about 3 hours. We did this with 4 kids who actually did really well and managed to not only keep up, but somehow seemed to have energy left over after the hike (until we got in the car of course where their eyes became suddenly heavy).
During those 4 miles I managed to get Teresa to cross a log over a stream even though she had effectively already crossed the stream by jumping over it (video below), climb several steep hills, make her believe there was a snake under a log she was crossing, climb over trees, cross a stream on questionable rocks, and slide down a hill on her butt.
In other words, it was a typical hike =) While Teresa managed to keep her footing, my youngest daughter Harlee is the one who managed to give me the video shot I had been waiting for by falling on her butt =) No worries, she was fine and laughing when it happened.
I on the other hand created no antics today, other than egging Teresa on, and making the entire crew climb steep “mountains”. Ok they are hills, but I am from Texas and down here they are “mountains” y’all!
We had a great time and hiked a lot further than we had planned. In fact I plan on going out again very soon as there is a ton more to explore there!
After the hike, we decided an IHOP dinner was in order! Nothing like replacing all those calories and then some!
We have decided to try and do a family hike every weekend (as our schedules permit). This hike allowed us to spend time together as a family, plus allowed the kids to spend time with each other; all while having fun and getting some much needed exercise.
What antics will I create next?
Until next time…hike on!
